As the sun shines brightly over Pensacola Beach, the local news is buzzing with significant developments that reflect both community spirit and innovation. From sustainability efforts in the hospitality industry to inspiring stories of athletic ambition, here’s a closer look at the headlines making waves today.

Investigation into Plastic Surgeon Ben Brown

In a notable development, Plastic Surgeon Ben Brown is currently under investigation by the Florida Department of Health. While details surrounding the investigation remain sparse, it has raised concerns within the community regarding medical practices and patient safety. As the inquiry unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability in the healthcare sector.

Pensacola Para-Athlete Eyes 2024 Summer Paralympics

In a more uplifting story, a local para-athlete is setting their sights on competing in the 2024 Summer Paralympics. This athlete’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination, inspiring many in the Pensacola community. As they train and prepare for the upcoming games, their story highlights the importance of inclusivity and support for athletes with disabilities.

Surf & Sand Hotel: A Step Towards Sustainability

Amidst these headlines, the Surf & Sand Hotel has made a significant leap towards sustainability, becoming Pensacola Beach’s first solar-powered hotel. In collaboration with local solar power contractor SunFarm Energy, the hotel recently completed the installation of 330 solar panels on its roof. This initiative is projected to generate approximately half of the hotel’s annual energy needs, which is equivalent to the energy consumption of about 21 homes.

The Surf & Sand Hotel, owned by Innisfree Hotels, boasts 100 rooms and is part of a larger commitment to sustainable practices across its portfolio. Innisfree Hotels operates 27 properties throughout Florida and other Southern states, and they are keen on using the Surf & Sand’s renovation as a model for future projects.

Commitment to Environmental Responsibility

Bethanne Edwards, the Director of Sustainability at Innisfree Hotels, emphasized the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact. “When Innisfree created the sustainability department, one of the purposes was to begin working on lowering our environmental impact and taking care of our planet,” she stated. The hotel aims to monitor the success of its sustainability goals over the next six months, with hopes of expanding these initiatives to other properties in the future.

Edwards expressed optimism that the Surf & Sand Hotel’s solar project would serve as a beacon for the community and the tourism industry, demonstrating that significant investments in sustainability can yield positive results for both the environment and business.

Energy Savings and Environmental Impact

The installation of the solar panels is expected to have a substantial impact on the hotel’s carbon footprint. The project will help reduce emissions by an amount equivalent to nearly 19,000 gallons of gasoline and almost 187,000 pounds of coal being burned. Edwards noted that the decision to pursue solar energy was driven by the high utility costs associated with operating a hotel around the clock. “Lowering utilities usage was one of the biggest impacts we could have,” she explained.

No Increase in Hotel Rates

Despite the significant investment in solar technology, guests at the Surf & Sand Hotel can rest assured that their rates will not increase as a result of the project. Edwards confirmed that visitors will not experience any changes in pricing, stating, “If anything, this project is just going to improve what we can do at that property.”

Conclusion

As Pensacola continues to evolve, the stories emerging from the community reflect a blend of challenges and triumphs. From the investigation into a local surgeon to the inspiring aspirations of para-athletes and the groundbreaking sustainability efforts of the Surf & Sand Hotel, these headlines are a reminder of the resilience and innovation that define this vibrant coastal city. As the community rallies around these developments, it is clear that Pensacola is committed to a brighter, more sustainable future.
