Pensacola Tourism Unfazed by NAACP Travel Advisory Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, tourism leaders in Pensacola, Florida, remain optimistic about the influx of visitors, despite a recent travel advisory issued by the NAACP. The advisory, which warns potential travelers about the state’s "openly hostile" environment toward African Americans, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals, has not deterred local tourism officials from promoting the area as a welcoming destination.

The NAACP’s Travel Advisory

The travel advisory was released by NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson in response to a series of controversial laws signed by Governor Ron DeSantis. Johnson emphasized that these laws weaponize race and create an unwelcoming atmosphere for many Floridians. He urged potential tourists, particularly African Americans and other marginalized groups, to exercise caution when considering travel to Florida.

In his statement, Johnson articulated the gravity of the situation, saying, "We should not use race or othering as a tool to weaponize against people." His comments reflect a growing concern among civil rights advocates regarding the implications of recent legislative actions in the state.

Local Response: A Warm Welcome

Despite the advisory, Darien Schaefer, CEO of Visit Pensacola, reports that the travel advisory has not significantly impacted tourism discussions. Currently attending a tradeshow in another state, Schaefer noted, "Not a single person has even mentioned the travel advisory." He emphasized that the Pensacola area prides itself on being welcoming to all visitors, highlighting the friendliness of local residents.

"We have not seen that become a major issue," Schaefer added. "Until we have something that really is an issue, it’s not." His comments reflect a broader sentiment among local tourism leaders who believe that Pensacola’s charm and hospitality will continue to attract visitors, regardless of the political climate.

Voices from the Community

Rodney Jones, a lifetime member of the NAACP and former president of the Pensacola chapter, supports the advisory but encourages visitors to enjoy what the area has to offer. "We have such a lively tourism industry here in this greater area of Florida, so I would never tell them not to come here," he stated. However, he cautioned potential residents to be aware of the current socio-political landscape in Florida.

The current president of the Pensacola NAACP chapter echoed Jones’s sentiments, asserting that now is not the ideal time for tourists to visit Florida. "This is not a good time to visit Florida to help us make a point in how our governor is treating African Americans and all people of color," he said, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about the issues at hand.

State Officials Respond

In response to the NAACP’s advisory, the governor’s office dismissed the concerns, stating, "Florida is seeing record-breaking tourism. This is nothing more than a stunt." This assertion reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to promoting its tourism industry, which has been a significant economic driver for Florida.

The advisory comes on the heels of Governor DeSantis’s controversial decisions to block funding for diversity programs in schools and to limit discussions surrounding gender issues and critical race theory. These actions have sparked widespread debate and concern among civil rights organizations and community leaders.

Looking Ahead

As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, Pensacola’s tourism leaders remain hopeful that the area’s natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture will continue to draw visitors. While the NAACP’s travel advisory has raised important questions about the state’s political climate, local officials are focused on showcasing Pensacola as a welcoming destination for all.

In a time of division and uncertainty, the resilience of Pensacola’s tourism industry serves as a reminder of the power of community and the importance of hospitality. As travelers make their plans for the holiday weekend, the message from local leaders is clear: Pensacola is ready to welcome everyone with open arms.
