Exploring Freedom: The Hundred Years Tour

In a world dominated by schedules, deadlines, and the relentless pace of modern life, the desire for freedom and adventure often feels like a distant dream. However, for newlyweds Jenn and Ryan Eaton, that dream is about to become a reality. In just over a month, this adventurous couple will embark on a journey across the United States with the ambitious goal of visiting every national park site in the country. Their journey coincides with the centennial anniversary of the National Park Service, making it a fitting tribute to the natural wonders that define America.

The Inspiration Behind the Journey

The seeds for this grand adventure were sown during Jenn’s college years at the University of West Florida. A class trip led by Dr. Patrick Moore exposed her to the breathtaking landscapes of national parks like the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. This experience ignited a passion for exploration and a desire to connect with the nation’s natural heritage. Inspired by the National Park Service passport books that her friends collected during the trip, Jenn began to dream of a journey that would allow her to visit all 411 national park sites across the United States.

"I thought maybe it could be something on my bucket list one day," Jenn recalls. "But then I realized the centennial year was 2016, so I set that as the goal year."

A Journey of Love and Commitment

The journey took on a deeper significance when Jenn met Ryan. Their first date included a conversation about her dream trip, and Ryan was immediately captivated. Ten months later, he proposed to Jenn at the Naval Live Oaks National Park, solidifying their commitment not only to each other but also to the adventure that lay ahead. After their wedding in October, the couple began planning "The Hundred Years Tour," a name that reflects both their goal and the legacy of the National Park Service.

Embracing Minimalism and Sustainability

As they prepare for their journey, the Eatons are embracing a minimalist lifestyle, selling their belongings and leaving their full-time jobs behind. Ryan, a talented chef, and Jenn, who worked in sales, are ready to trade their conventional lives for the open road. "I don’t have time to wonder if I’m going to make it to 65," Ryan explains. "I want to do it now, while I’m still young and healthy."

Their preparations include selling Ryan’s motorcycle to boost their savings and learning how to live sustainably on the road. With only a couple of suitcases and a commitment to sourcing food from local farmers’ markets, the couple is determined to make their journey work. "We can find a way to survive on the road. People do it all the time," Ryan asserts.

Family Reactions and Support

While many friends and family members have expressed excitement for the couple’s adventure, reactions have varied. Ryan’s father, Mark, initially questioned the decision but ultimately admired their courage to pursue their dreams. "People make a plan and set a goal, but nobody executes anymore; they just dream," he says. Jenn’s mother, Beth, had a more cautious response but has gradually come to support her daughter’s ambitious plans.

The Road Ahead

The Eatons’ travel plans include utilizing Ryan’s gold-colored 2001 Volvo station wagon, which will serve as both their vehicle and sleeping quarters. They have outfitted the car with a nearly full-size bed and a tent that attaches to the back, creating a comfortable living space. With essential gear like folding chairs, hiking clothing, and digital cameras, they are ready to document their journey.

Their goal is not only to explore the beauty of the national parks but also to raise awareness about the importance of these natural treasures. "A lot of the parks have construction projects, safety concerns, and historical structures that need updating," Jenn explains. "The more people who come into the park — and who are aware — the better."

Documenting the Adventure

The couple plans to document their journey through a blog, a podcast series, and a feature-length documentary. With the support of a sponsor, Revolve Camera Gear, they aim to capture dynamic shots of their adventures and share their experiences with a wider audience. "We’re willing to shoot and capture whatever happens out there," Ryan says, emphasizing their openness to the unpredictability of the journey.

Connecting with Nature and Community

As they prepare to hit the road, the Eatons are eager to connect with fellow park enthusiasts and share their experiences. They have already received messages from individuals interested in meeting up at various parks along their route. "We really want people to see where we are, where we’re going, and start to get excited about the places and parks near them," Jenn states.

A New Lifestyle

Ultimately, the Hundred Years Tour is more than just a trip; it’s an exploration of a new lifestyle. The Eatons are ready to embrace the challenges and joys of living on the road, knowing that their experiences will shape who they are as individuals and as a couple. "This isn’t just a trip; it’s an attempted lifestyle change," Ryan reflects. "We aren’t going to be the same when we get back, and we aren’t going to want the same things."

As they prepare to set out on June 5, the Eatons are filled with excitement and anticipation for the journey ahead. They hope to find an unrushed enjoyment in their travels while soaking up the history and natural beauty of the United States. "There’s a place for all of us out there — even us weirdos who want to live out of our cars," Jenn concludes.
