New Dune Walkovers Enhance Accessibility on Pensacola Beach
Pensacola Beach is set to become even more inviting for beachgoers with the introduction of two new dune walkovers, providing enhanced access to the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Located at Avenida 16 and 18 off Via De Luna Drive, these walkovers, designated as 25A and 25B, are designed to improve the beach experience for both residents and visitors alike.
Features of the New Walkovers
The 25A crossover includes a small off-street parking lot and a ramp system, making it convenient for those who wish to park nearby before heading to the beach. Meanwhile, the 25B walkover offers direct beach access via a ramp, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the sandy shores without the hassle of navigating through dunes. These features are particularly beneficial for individuals with mobility challenges, as they promote inclusivity and ease of access.
The Role of the Santa Rosa Island Authority
The Santa Rosa Island Authority (SRIA) played a pivotal role in the development of these walkovers. In November, the SRIA contracted 5M Construction Resources to undertake the project, which began in earnest last month. Mike Burns, the Executive Director of SRIA, expressed enthusiasm about the new installations, stating, “The new dune walkovers are much more functional, easily accessible for residents, visitors, and our ADA community that utilizes the beach. I think it’ll make it a lot easier for them to access and enjoy Pensacola Beach as well.”
Competitive Bidding Process
The selection of 5M Construction was not solely based on cost, although their bid of approximately $317,962 was lower than that of their competitor, Loftis Marine LLC, which proposed $383,500. Burns noted that the decision was influenced more by 5M’s proven efficiency on previous projects, which gave the SRIA confidence in their ability to complete the walkovers in a timely manner.
Timely Completion Before Spring Break
With spring break approaching, the urgency to complete the walkovers became paramount. The SRIA aimed to have the project finished before the influx of visitors to the beach. 5M Construction began work in January, initially anticipating a completion date in early March. Despite facing unexpected challenges, including a rare snowfall, the team managed to stay on track and complete the walkovers ahead of schedule.
Burns humorously reflected on the weather-related setbacks, stating, “We had some little setbacks, but we overcame every challenge out there. I thought they did a great job of planning and having equipment there, so they didn’t have to move equipment on and off the beach … very efficient.”
A Welcoming Addition to the Community
The new dune walkovers are more than just functional structures; they represent a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for both residents and visitors to Pensacola Beach. As the community looks forward to the upcoming beach season, these walkovers will undoubtedly serve as a vital link between the beach and the public, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
In conclusion, the installation of the new dune walkovers at Pensacola Beach marks a significant step towards improving accessibility and enhancing the overall beach experience. With their completion ahead of the busy spring break season, beachgoers can look forward to easier access to the stunning Gulf waters, making Pensacola Beach an even more attractive destination for all.
