The End of an Era: Dollarhide’s Music to Close After 35 Years

In the heart of downtown Pensacola, a beloved institution is preparing to close its doors for the final time. Dollarhide’s Music, a cornerstone of the local music scene since its inception on March 1, 1988, is set to conclude its operations in late May. Co-owners Bill and Margaret Dollarhide have decided to retire, marking the end of an era for a store that has served thousands of customers and nurtured countless musical talents over the decades.

A Humble Beginning

When Dollarhide’s Music first opened, the storefront was adorned with freshly painted lettering that proudly proclaimed its name. Bill Dollarhide recalls the skepticism he faced on that inaugural day. "These two ladies looked up at the sign, ignored me, and said, ‘That won’t last,’" he reminisced. Yet, amidst the doubt, a small glimmer of hope emerged when a customer walked in asking for harmonicas, offering a reassuring comment that the store would be alright. "I got failure and success predicted on the first day of business," he chuckled, reflecting on the contrasting predictions that would shape the future of Dollarhide’s Music.

A Legacy of Musical Excellence

Over the years, Dollarhide’s Music has evolved into a trusted name in the industry, known for its extensive selection of pianos, keyboards, and organs. The store offers instruments ranging from affordable options priced at $500 to high-end models exceeding $200,000. The Dollarhides have cultivated relationships with premier piano manufacturers and have become a go-to destination for music educators and aspiring musicians alike.

In 2014, the couple received an offer to sell the business, but they declined, choosing instead to continue their journey. However, as Bill turned 70, the reality of retirement began to weigh on him. "It hit me like a brick," he admitted, prompting the couple to consider the inevitable conclusion of their long-standing business.

Preparing for the Final Curtain

As the closing date approaches, Dollarhide’s Music is gearing up for a liquidation sale, set to begin on Thursday morning. The store will temporarily close its doors on Tuesday and Wednesday to prepare for the event, which will last up to 60 days. With 75 pianos in stock, the Dollarhides are eager to find new homes for these instruments at deep discounts, ensuring that their legacy continues in the hands of new musicians.

The couple’s decision to retire comes not only from a desire to step back from the business but also from a wish to remain active in the Pensacola music scene. They plan to travel and explore new adventures, including trips to Destin, Scotland, and Ireland—experiences they had put on hold during the recent recession.

A Community Impact

Dollarhide’s Music has not only been a retail store but also a hub for community engagement. The Dollarhides co-founded Bravo for Kids, a nonprofit organization that raises funds to provide financially challenged children with the opportunity to participate in their school orchestras. This commitment to fostering musical talent in the community has left a lasting impact on the lives of many young musicians.

Michael Clark, who joined the Dollarhide team in 1993, expressed his happiness for the couple as they prepare to close this chapter of their lives. "I’m happy for them that they are able to go out the way they want to go out," he said, highlighting the respect and admiration the Dollarhides have garnered over the years.

Looking Ahead

As the Dollarhides prepare to hand over the keys to their landlord, Bobby Switzer, they are also finalizing an agreement with a local company to take over their products and service staff, ensuring that the legacy of Dollarhide’s Music will continue in some form. While the store’s name will not carry on, the spirit of music and community that the Dollarhides fostered will undoubtedly live on.

Bill Dollarhide reflects on the journey he and Margaret have shared, both in life and in business. "We have worked in the same organization or company together every day for the 47 years of our marriage," he noted, emphasizing the strength of their partnership. Their shared passion for music, cultivated through years of experience and dedication, has allowed them to create a welcoming environment for customers and musicians alike.

A Fond Farewell

As Dollarhide’s Music prepares to close its doors, the Pensacola community is invited to celebrate the legacy of a store that has been a beacon of musical inspiration for 35 years. The Dollarhides leave behind a rich history filled with memories, relationships, and a commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians. As they embark on their new adventures, they carry with them the gratitude of a community that has cherished their contributions to the world of music.
