Discovering Pensacola Beach: A Hidden Gem on the Gulf Coast

About two minutes into a sunset sailboat cruise, I found myself wondering, “Why in the world haven’t I been to Pensacola Beach before?” As someone who has always had a love affair with beaches, it was astonishing to realize that I had overlooked the sugary-white sands of Pensacola Beach, especially considering it’s only a five-and-a-half-hour drive from Huntsville, Alabama. The pristine beaches and cotton candy-colored sunsets alone would be enough to entice anyone to this sun-kissed coastal town, but there’s so much more to Pensacola than meets the eye.

Day 1: A Warm Welcome

My first day in Pensacola was a brief but impactful introduction to the area. I checked into the Hilton Pensacola Beach Gulf Front, a family-friendly hotel that offers spacious one, two, and three-bedroom suites. My Gulfside room featured a private balcony with stunning beach views, two outdoor pools, and a children’s play area. The hotel also boasts an indoor pool, a beachfront pool deck, and private cabanas for rent, making it an ideal spot for relaxation. With three on-site restaurants, I could have easily spent my entire trip lounging at the hotel.

One of the highlights of my stay was the unexpected perks, such as the ability to hop between neighboring properties and a complimentary tequila tasting in the lobby upon my arrival.

The evening was capped off with a sunset cruise courtesy of Gulf Breeze Sailing. This one-and-a-half-hour sail through Pensacola Bay was not only relaxing but also educational, as the crew shared insights about the city’s rich history and attractions. For those looking for a more intimate experience, Gulf Breeze Sailing also offers full and half-day sails, perfect for couples.

Dinner was at the Casino Beach Bar and Grill, located right off the Pensacola Beach Pier. The Ahi Tuna Nachos were a standout dish, and the lobster club sandwich was nothing short of spectacular. A fun fact: the restaurant dims its lighting in the summer to protect nesting sea turtles, showcasing their commitment to conservation.

Day 2: Exploring History and Culture

The next day, I set my sights on the Pensacola Lighthouse, a historic landmark that has stood for over 150 years. Climbing its 177 steps rewarded me with breathtaking views of the Pensacola Pass. For those visiting on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the view is even more spectacular as the Blue Angels practice their aerial maneuvers, but reservations are required.

Just across the street lies the National Naval Aviation Museum, a must-visit for aviation enthusiasts. The museum features a stunning seven-story glass atrium and offers full-motion simulators, a giant screen theater, and beautifully restored aircraft. With 350,000 square feet of exhibits, it’s easy to spend an entire day here.

After a morning of exploration, I headed downtown to Jaco’s Bayfront Bar & Grille for lunch. Located at the end of Palafox Pier, it’s a great spot to enjoy a meal while taking in the waterfront views. Nearby, the Plaza De Luna Splash Pad offers a fun place for kids to cool off.

Palafox Street, named one of America’s top 10 streets, is a vibrant area filled with restaurants, boutiques, and galleries. However, eager for some beach time, I decided to explore the historic Belmont-Devilliers neighborhood instead. This area features outdoor murals celebrating Pensacola’s historically black business community and is home to the Five Sisters Blues Cafe, known for its delicious collard greens.

After enjoying another stunning sunset on the beach, I ventured back to Palafox Street to check out the nightlife. I made a mental note of shops and bars to visit on my next trip, including Blend Lounge, a trendy spot perfect for a girls’ or guys’ getaway.

Day 3: Museums and Shopping

With rain in the forecast for my last day, I took the opportunity to visit a couple more museums and do some shopping before heading home. My first stop was the Pensacola Museum of Art, housed in a charming Spanish Revival building that was once the city jail. Just a few blocks away is the T.T. Wentworth, Jr. Florida State Museum, which showcases Florida’s rich heritage through various artifacts and exhibits.

One of the highlights was a replica of Trader Jon’s, a former popular tourist destination known for its eclectic atmosphere and military memorabilia. The museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Pensacola’s past.

Before leaving, I strolled down Palafox Street to pick up some luxurious handmade bath and body products from Belle Ame’ and unique accessories from Indigeaux Denim Bar & Boutique. No trip would be complete without a stop at Bubba’s Sweet Spot, a candy store filled with nostalgic treats and homemade ice cream that’s sure to delight visitors of all ages.

Conclusion: A Return to Paradise

My whirlwind trip to Pensacola Beach was packed with unforgettable experiences, but I barely scratched the surface of what this charming coastal town has to offer. I’m already planning a return visit with my daughter later this summer, with a list of new adventures that includes Wahoos Stadium, Big Lagoon State Park, and the iconic Graffiti Bridge.

If you’re looking for a beach destination that combines stunning natural beauty with rich history and culture, Pensacola Beach should be at the top of your list. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s meet at the beach!
