UWF Argos’ Season Ends with Disappointing Loss to Valdosta State

In a pivotal matchup that held the weight of the University of West Florida’s (UWF) playoff aspirations, the Argonauts fell flat against Valdosta State, losing 28-7 in their final game of the regular season. This defeat not only marked the end of UWF’s hopes for a postseason berth but also secured Valdosta State’s 11th Gulf South Conference championship, their first outright title since 2019.

A Game of Missed Opportunities

The game began with both teams exchanging offensive drives, keeping the contest competitive. However, the tide turned dramatically when Valdosta State’s quarterback, Sammy Edwards, connected with Rodney Bullard on a stunning 50-yard touchdown pass. This pivotal moment shifted the momentum firmly in favor of the Blazers, who capitalized on the Argos’ struggles.

UWF head coach Kaleb Nobles reflected on the team’s performance, stating, "We just didn’t do enough. I take full responsibility. That’s on me." Despite the loss, Nobles expressed pride in his players’ efforts, emphasizing the need for improvement moving forward.

Key Turning Points

The Blazers extended their lead just before halftime with a 21-yard touchdown run from Blake Hester, making it a two-possession game. The real dagger came in the third quarter when Edwards threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Ajiero, pushing the score to 21-7.

UWF managed to respond with a glimmer of hope when quarterback Marcus Stokes executed a 30-yard option run for a touchdown, narrowing the gap. However, the Argos’ momentum was short-lived. A crucial fourth-and-5 attempt on their next drive fell flat, leaving them unable to capitalize on their defensive stop.

Valdosta State sealed their victory with a final touchdown from running back Alfonso Franklin, leaving UWF with little time to mount a comeback. The Argos’ offense sputtered, going three-and-out on their next possession, allowing the Blazers to run out the clock in victory formation.

Offensive Struggles

Stokes finished the game with a lackluster performance, completing 10 of 22 passes for just 110 yards and suffering two sacks. He did lead the ground game with 47 rushing yards, but the overall offensive output was disappointing. Nobles pointed out the team’s failure to execute downfield throws and missed blocks, stating, "When you do those things against a good team, those things get exposed."

The UWF defense, which had been a strength throughout the season, struggled against Valdosta State’s offense. The Argos allowed 195 rushing yards, the highest total since their game against Delta State, and surrendered over 100 passing yards for the first time since their victory over Shorter.

Season Reflection and Future Outlook

With the loss, UWF concluded the 2024 campaign with a 7-3 record, including a 5-2 mark in the Gulf South Conference. The Argos were ranked eighth in the NCAA Regional Rankings for Super Region 2, but Saturday’s defeat likely pushed them out of playoff contention. The team’s fate will be revealed during the NCAA Selection Show, but the outlook is grim for UWF’s hopes of extending their streak of four consecutive playoff appearances.

Nobles acknowledged the challenges faced throughout the season, particularly after a tough loss to Grand Valley State. He praised his team’s resilience, stating, "Everybody wrote us off… I’m proud of them for how they responded." Looking ahead, he expressed optimism about the young talent on the roster, hinting at potential for future success.

As the Argos process this disappointing end to their season, the focus will now shift to building for the future, learning from the lessons of this campaign, and striving to return stronger next year. The sting of this loss will serve as a reminder of the hard work needed to compete at the highest levels of college football.
