Plans for an Iconic Pensacola Beach Sailfish Sign Move Forward

Plans to install a beloved piece of Pensacola Beach history are back on track after a brief postponement earlier this month. The owners of The Local, Dustin and Mandy Vaughn, are excited to bring a sailfish from an old Pensacola Beach welcome sign to their store, located at 1591 Via de Luna Drive. This installation aims to create a new tourist attraction that will invite visitors to capture memories against a backdrop of local history.

The Sailfish: A Symbol of Pensacola Beach

Originally designed by local commercial artist Patricia “Pat” Born, the Pensacola Beach welcome sign has been a cherished landmark since its inception in the early 1960s. Over the years, the sign has undergone several transformations, but the sailfish that once topped it has remained a symbol of the area’s vibrant culture and coastal charm. The Vaughns purchased this iconic sailfish after it was removed following Hurricane Ivan in 2004, and they are now eager to restore it to its rightful place in the community.

Community Engagement and Excitement

Dustin Vaughn expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We’re excited to move forward… once the sign (comes) up, we look forward to having visitors come take pictures and enjoy the sun with us.” The Vaughns are not just looking to enhance their business; they aim to create a welcoming space for tourists and locals alike to gather and celebrate the beauty of Pensacola Beach.

Before the sailfish can be installed, the Vaughns must secure the necessary permits from the Santa Rosa Island Authority (SRIA). Their proposal faced a temporary setback during a recent committee meeting, where board members sought more information about the installation and maintenance plans. In response, the Vaughns submitted over 30 pages of detailed plans, including conceptual drawings that illustrate how the sign will look once it’s installed.

On August 27, the SRIA Board unanimously approved the Vaughns’ proposal, with District 1 Representative Bruce Childers expressing his support: “Now that I see it, I like the idea and I think it looks pretty nice.”

A Vintage Touch with Modern Considerations

The sailfish will be installed next to The Local, and the Vaughns plan to incorporate dimmable lighting to minimize disruption to nearby residents and wildlife. While the sailfish will maintain its vintage appearance, it will undergo some restoration to address minor damages incurred during previous storms. “We’re still going to keep it the vintage way it looks,” Dustin assured.

Responsibility for Maintenance

Once the sailfish is installed, the Vaughns will take full responsibility for its upkeep and maintenance. This includes regular cleaning, maintaining the surrounding area, and making any necessary repairs in the event of damage. Their commitment to preserving this piece of history reflects their dedication not only to their business but also to the community and its heritage.

A New Tourist Destination

The Vaughns envision the sailfish as more than just an art piece; they see it as a new focal point for tourists seeking memorable photo opportunities. As Pensacola Beach continues to gain recognition—recently being ranked as the best coastal city in the U.S. among 143 areas—the installation of the sailfish sign is poised to attract even more visitors to the area.

Conclusion

The installation of the Pensacola Beach sailfish sign represents a blend of history, community spirit, and artistic expression. As the Vaughns work to bring this iconic piece back to life, they invite everyone to join them in celebrating the rich heritage of Pensacola Beach. With plans to have the sign up before Spring Break, the community eagerly anticipates the return of this beloved landmark, ready to welcome visitors with open arms and a splash of coastal charm.
