Pensacola Beach Recovers from Severe Weather: A Community’s Resilience

Pensacola Beach, Florida, is in the midst of recovery after severe weather swept through the area early Saturday morning, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. As the community begins to pick up the pieces, local businesses are working hard to reopen their doors and serve residents and visitors alike.
Business Resilience Amidst Adversity
One of the first businesses to reopen was Water Pig BBQ, although it is not yet operating at full capacity. General Manager Craig Norman shared the harrowing experience of the storm, describing how staff had to leap to safety as the weather turned violent. “Guys were standing on the deck out here and had to jump into different places because they saw it coming from across the street,” he recounted.
The National Weather Service of Mobile has been actively sharing footage of a waterspout that formed over Pensacola Beach, adding to the community’s concerns. Cook Jimmy Rip expressed his hope that such an event would never occur again, reflecting the fear and uncertainty that gripped the area during the storm. “I hope I don’t ever have to do that again,” he said.
Damage Assessment and Cleanup Efforts
As of now, there has been no confirmation from the National Weather Service regarding whether a tornado touched down in the area. However, eyewitness accounts and the extent of the damage have led many to draw comparisons to a category 2 storm that impacted the region in 2020. Norman noted, “We’ve never experienced this in the five years that I’ve been here. This is worse than Sally, at least for us out here. It was a freak of nature.”
Crews worked tirelessly until nearly midnight to clear debris and restore order. Norman described the initial cleanup efforts, stating, “We started yesterday with trying to get the smoker off of the beach, get it back to its original spot out of the water.” The team managed to retrieve around 10 to 12 tables and chairs that had been swept into the water, ensuring that nothing remained hazardous.
Impact on Local Dining
The storm’s impact on local dining establishments was significant. At Water Pig BBQ, the dining area was cut in half, and they lost the majority of their tables. “Water Pig is still a little bit under capacity; we lost the majority of our tables,” Norman explained. Despite these setbacks, both Water Pig BBQ and Red Fish Blue Fish managed to reopen just in time for Mother’s Day, inviting patrons to enjoy a meal by the beach. “Come put your toes in the sand, and eat a little bit of BBQ while you’re doing it,” Norman encouraged.
